Melasma darker despite daily sunscreen?

Hello, I’m Dr. Kim Kyung-soo, Medical Director of UHCELL Clinic Seocho branch.
Daily sunscreen doesn’t remove every reason melasma can darken. The amount you apply in the morning, a lunch break outdoors and wiping away sweat all affect protection. A high SPF on the bottle doesn’t mean one morning application lasts all day.
I think checking when you apply it and whether it irritates your skin is a sound starting point, alongside the protection rating. Start with today’s use.
Does a high SPF last all day?
No. SPF mainly describes protection against sunburn caused by UVB. If melasma is a concern, check that your sunscreen also protects against UVA. A broad-spectrum label means coverage for both UVA and UVB.
The American Academy of Dermatology advises SPF 30 or higher, broad-spectrum coverage and water resistance. Water resistance doesn’t mean a product cannot wash or sweat off. Check the expiry date and instructions. A higher number cannot make up for too little sunscreen or missed reapplication.
Count your outdoor reapplications
Start before going out. AAD guidance is to apply sunscreen about 15 minutes before heading outdoors and reapply about every two hours while outside. Reapply after swimming or sweating, and follow the product’s directions.
Think of a lunchtime walk near Gyodae Station or wiping your face after exercise. Put the time you went outside next to the time you reapplied; gaps become easier to spot. Remember your ears and neck as well as your face. Add a hat and shade so sunscreen isn’t doing all the work.
Visible light matters in melasma, too
Sunlight isn’t only UV. Visible light, the part we can see, can worsen melasma in some people, especially those with darker skin tones. AAD lists tinted sunscreen containing iron oxide as an option for people with melasma.
A tinted finish alone doesn’t mean every brightening cream offers the same protection. Check the sunscreen label and ingredients together, and ask whether it contains iron oxide. A shade that suits your skin makes it easier to keep applying enough. This does not mean your phone screen is the main cause of melasma.

Stinging comes before another brightening product
Check the irritation first. Burning or stinging after skin care can signal irritation, which can also darken pigmentation. In this situation, I think identifying the irritating product should come before adding another brightener or exfoliant.
Note new products, immediate redness and where the color changed. Another pigmentation condition can resemble melasma, so a photograph alone isn’t a sound basis for choosing a laser. Sunscreen cannot clear every case of melasma either. If pigment keeps darkening or changes shape, arrange an examination to confirm the diagnosis and assess whether medication or a procedure is appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Do I need sunscreen on cloudy days?
Yes. Clouds don’t remove sun exposure. Use sunscreen with a hat and shade when you’re outdoors.
Is any tinted sunscreen suitable for melasma?
Don’t judge by color alone. Check SPF, UVA protection, iron oxide and how your skin responds. Choosing a product does not replace melasma treatment.
Reapplying over makeup is difficult. What can I do?
Morning makeup doesn’t guarantee afternoon protection. Carry a product you can reapply in the amount its instructions require. Use a hat and shade when reapplication is difficult, too.
How soon will a new sunscreen fade melasma?
There is no fixed number of days to promise. Causes, pigment depth and irritation differ. Consistent sun protection sometimes needs to be combined with other treatment.
For a pigmentation consultation in Seocho, bring your sunscreen’s name and ingredient list, when the color changed, and a list of medicines you take. Your history of switching products is useful, too.
