Splitting nails after gel? Pause before covering them

Hello, I’m Dr. Kim Kyung-soo, director of UHCELL Clinic Seocho.
After removing gel, the tip of a nail may peel in layers and catch on clothing. Another manicure can seem like a quick cover. Covering damage is not the same as recovery. I start with how the gel was removed and whether the surrounding skin hurts, not which hardener to add.
Peeling tips or a change in just one nail?
The nail plate is made of hard keratin. Pulling off gel or filing the surface heavily can thin it and separate layers. Acetone may also dry or sting the surrounding skin.
Gel is not the only possible cause. Wet work, detergents and repeated trauma matter too. Several peeling nail tips differ from one nail that changes color or lifts from the skin. I look for reduced pain and irritation rather than a harder-looking surface. Heavy buffing can worsen damage even if it looks smoother briefly.
Give the nails a break from irritation
Keep nails short without cutting into the skin. Gently smooth a catching edge and do not dig under a lifted nail with a pointed tool.
- Moisturize nails and nearby skin after washing
- Use gloves for wet work; dry or replace them if damp inside
- Do not cut or push back cuticles
- Do not use nails to open cans or scrape objects
Avoid repeatedly covering damage with gel or artificial nails. Allow a break. If a nail is already lifting or painful, ask about safe removal rather than forcing it off. Avoid prolonged soaking of the whole hand in acetone.
Hardeners and supplements are not instant repairs
A hardener is not right for every damaged nail; increased stiffness can make some nails more likely to break. If it stings or the surrounding skin itches, check the product and when you used it.
I prefer to identify an irritant to remove before adding another product. Moisturizer helps dryness but cannot instantly reattach peeled layers at their old thickness. Nail changes alone do not establish a nutrient deficiency or justify high-dose supplements. Some supplements affect lab tests, so disclose them before an examination or blood test. Recovery also requires new nail growth.
Color change, lifting or pain needs a closer look
Yellow or green discoloration, thickening and lifting are not simply dry nails. A clinician can assess fungal infection and other causes, with testing when needed. Color alone does not diagnose nail fungus.
Seek care for red swelling, pain or pus rather than covering it. A new dark vertical stripe or widening pigment change also needs assessment. Take small wounds seriously with diabetes or reduced immunity. Fever or rapidly spreading redness calls for prompt evaluation. Checking inflammation and infection comes before restoring the manicure.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can gel cover the split area?
Continued covering can hide damage or infection. If the nail hurts or lifts, ask about removal and protection first.
Does a thin nail mean fungus?
No. Removal damage, wet work and skin conditions are other possibilities. The pattern and any needed tests help distinguish them.
When can I have another manicure?
First check for remaining pain, lifting and inflammation. A single waiting period does not fit every nail.
At UHCELL Clinic Seocho, bring manicure and removal dates, product names and when pain or discoloration began. I put reducing irritation and identifying changes needing care ahead of making the nail coating harder.
