Peeling between toes: dry skin or athlete’s foot?

Hello, I’m Dr. Kim Kyung-soo, director of UHCELL Clinic Seocho.

You take off your socks and notice white peeling skin between the toes, looking more waterlogged after a shower. It may not be the same problem as a dry heel. I check the toe webs, soles and nails separately. Itch alone does not diagnose athlete’s foot.

Peeling skin is not a diagnosis

Athlete’s foot is a fungal skin infection. It can cause itchy white patches between toes, scaling, cracks or pain. The soles and sides can also be affected, sometimes with blisters.

Eczema, irritation and other conditions can look similar. Smell alone does not identify the cause. I review where it began, how it spread, nail changes and products used. A clinician may consider examining a small skin scraping for fungus. A photograph or home test cannot settle the diagnosis; testing and the appropriate service need clinical review.

Do not borrow a leftover itch cream

Avoid applying a leftover eczema cream when you do not know its ingredients. Using a steroid on suspected fungal infection without guidance can worsen it or change its appearance, making diagnosis harder. Less itch does not prove the cause is gone.

I check product names, application sites and duration before changing creams. Do not stop a prescribed treatment yourself: ask the prescriber about the possibility of fungal infection and whether to continue. Antifungal products differ in formulation and course. Follow the directions, do not stop early just because it looks better, and do not share medicines.

Dry the spaces between toes after washing

Focus on remaining moisture rather than scrubbing harder. Pat the toe spaces dry without rubbing peeling skin away. Change wet socks. A dry heel and a white, soggy toe web need different attention; do not automatically cover both with thick moisturizer.

Do not soak the feet in vinegar or disinfectant to test the problem. That can irritate or injure the skin.

  • Wear clean socks daily
  • Give shoes time to dry and check ventilation
  • Do not share towels, socks or shoes
  • Avoid bare feet in communal showers

Avoid scratching and spreading infection to other areas.

Pain, swelling or diabetes change the advice

A hot, red, painful or swollen foot or leg needs assessment for another infection rather than more exfoliation. Seek prompt care if redness spreads quickly or you develop a fever.

If you have diabetes or reduced immunity, ask early about even small cracks. Thickened or discolored nails, failure to improve and repeated episodes also need review. This article cannot distinguish eczema from fungal infection in an individual. A dermatologist’s assessment may be needed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does peeling between toes always mean fungus?

No. Eczema and irritation can look similar. The location, course and products need review, sometimes with testing.

Can I stop cream when the itch settles?

Do not decide from symptoms alone. Follow product and clinician instructions, and check before changing prescribed treatment.

Should I moisturize heels and toe webs alike?

Dry and waterlogged skin are different. Itchy or cracked toe spaces need cause-based assessment rather than the same thick layer everywhere.

When asking UHCELL Clinic Seocho about your skin, bring the starting location, date and photos of creams used. I focus on the appropriate assessment rather than asking you to scrub the peeling skin harder.
