Do Not Wait to Report Severe Pain or Skin Color Change After Filler

Hello, I am Dr. Kyungsoo Kim, Medical Director of UHCELL Clinic Seocho.

Knowing that swelling and bruising can occur after filler may make it hard to decide which changes can be watched. Severe pain that feels unusual or a change in skin color should not simply be treated as routine recovery.

I do not ask about pain intensity alone. I review when it began, the location, skin color, vision, and neurological symptoms together.

Which signs differ from expected swelling or bruising?

Mild swelling, bruising, tenderness, and redness can occur around an injection site. Their degree and duration vary by product, site, and individual.

Severe or increasing pain, sudden blanching, a blue or dusky color, or a spreading mottled pattern requires immediate contact with the treating clinic. Skin that feels cooler than the surrounding area also needs review.

I do not decide that everything is fine from one photo. The onset time and speed of change also matter.

Vision or stroke-like symptoms need emergency assessment

Sudden blurred vision, loss of vision, or severe eye pain during or shortly after filler needs immediate emergency medical help. Facial droop, slurred speech, or weakness in an arm or leg also requires urgent action. Call 119 in Korea.

Notify the treating clinic as well so the product and injection site can be communicated. Do not drive yourself; ask someone nearby for help.

I do not group these symptoms with routine swelling. Reducing delay is the priority.

Do not press hard or massage on your own

Even if the sides look uneven, hard pressure or repeated massage without specific clinical instructions can make assessment more difficult. Avoid intense heat, puncturing the area, or applying leftover medicine on your own.

Take front and side photos in the same light, and note when pain began and how it changed. Prepare the procedure date, site, and product name if available.

I use a call and photos to guide the timing of an in-person visit or emergency assessment. Do not set a waiting time by comparing online reviews.

Record swelling or redness that begins later

Not every adverse reaction begins immediately. New swelling, redness, warmth, a firm nodule, or drainage that begins days or longer afterward also needs review. Infection, inflammation, and other causes require different assessment, so do not diagnose it yourself.

Tell the clinician about recent illness, vaccination, dental treatment, or a new medicine. This history helps organize possible causes; it does not prove that one event caused the reaction.

The appropriate response varies with the filler, site, and course of symptoms. A clinician should assess it.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does every bruise after filler mean a complication?

Mild bruising and swelling can occur. Severe pain, skin color change, or a vision symptom requires immediate contact or emergency assessment.

Can I massage an uneven area at home?

Do not press or massage hard without specific clinical instructions. Take photos in consistent light and contact the treating clinic first.

Should I report swelling that starts several days later?

Yes. Record and report delayed swelling, redness, warmth, a firm nodule, or drainage.

Not every swollen area is dangerous, but severe pain, skin color change, and visual or neurological symptoms are not signs to watch and wait. Record the time, take photos, and seek help promptly.
