Retinoids and Glycolic Acid Before Scar Laser Treatment

Hello, I am Dr. Kyungsoo Kim, Medical Director of UHCELL Clinic Seocho.

Using a scrub or more acid than usual to “prepare” the skin before scar laser treatment can add irritation at the wrong time. Laser treatment delivers energy to the epidermis or dermis. Last-minute exfoliation is not a required preparation step.

I review the product name, ingredient, strength, area of use, frequency, and last use. A clear photo of the front and back label is more useful than guessing from a product category.

Products in the same family can leave different irritation

Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives, while glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid. Dryness, stinging, and peeling vary with the product, strength, and frequency.

Dermatology guidance for scar laser treatment includes stopping products containing a retinoid or glycolic acid 2 to 4 weeks beforehand. That number should not be copied to every laser and every skin condition.

The laser type, treatment site, and current irritation must be reviewed separately.

Do not add a scrub at the sink the night before

Do not add a coarse scrub, peeling pad, or high-strength acid on your own. Burning, stinging, or tightness that remains after cleansing can mean the skin is already irritated.

Remove base makeup and sunscreen with a gentle cleanser. Pat dry instead of rubbing. Tell the clinic if heat or tightness remains.

I do not recommend suddenly intensifying home care immediately before treatment.

Separate prescription medicine from cosmetics

For a prescription retinoid, provide the product name, reason it was prescribed, and the area of use. Do not stop it on your own; discuss timing with the prescriber.

For cosmetics, photograph both sides of the label. Similar names can refer to products with different ingredients, strengths or formulations. Retinoid and glycolic acid products should not be treated as interchangeable based on the name alone. Weekly and daily use are also different exposure patterns.

We decide from the exact product, not a guess.

Some skin findings call for rescheduling first

Marked redness, swelling, drainage, blisters, or pain that feels like skin cracking should be assessed first. Record when a new product was started and when symptoms appeared. Photos in consistent lighting can help.

Stopping a product for a few days does not mean every laser can proceed at the same energy. Scar depth, treatment area, skin thickness, and expected recovery time must be considered together.

Skin response and recovery vary. Confirm product-specific and procedure-specific instructions with the treating clinician.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Must every retinol cosmetic be stopped 4 weeks before treatment?

The same interval is not used for every product and laser. The product, strength, frequency, skin response, and laser type determine individualized instructions.

Should I scrub away flakes the night before?

Do not add a scrub, peeling pad, or high-strength acid on your own. Cleanse gently and report burning, stinging, or tightness.

Can I stop a prescription retinoid myself?

Do not stop it on your own. Tell the prescriber why and where you use it, and discuss the laser schedule.

Preparing for scar laser treatment does not mean stopping many products for an arbitrary length of time. It means identifying what you use and how the skin is responding.

UHCELL Clinic Seocho reviews product labels, skin condition, scar depth and area, and the recovery schedule together.
