Tell Us About Ear Pressure or Cold Symptoms Before Using an Oxygen Capsule

Hello, I am Dr. Kyungsoo Kim, Medical Director of UHCELL Clinic Seocho.

An oxygen capsule may look like a simple place to rest, but ear fullness can occur as pressure changes. The ears may need to equalize in a way similar to an airplane’s ascent or descent.

A cold, allergic congestion, or recent ear pain can change that experience. Your current ear, nasal, and breathing condition should be reviewed before the intended purpose of the session.

Why can the ears feel full?

The middle ear uses the Eustachian tube to balance pressure with the outside environment. Swallowing or yawning can open this passage, which explains the popping sensation.

A cold, rhinitis, or sinus symptoms may cause swelling around the nose and throat and make equalization harder. Trying to tolerate this can lead to ear pain, dizziness, or muffled hearing.

I ask about congestion, ear pain, discomfort after flying or diving, and recent ear surgery. Tell us when it began and which side is affected.

Do not push through increasing pressure

If fullness starts during use, tell the staff immediately. You may follow instructions to swallow or yawn gently, but do not strain forcefully through pain.

Devices differ in pressure, oxygen delivery, and intended use. Medical hyperbaric oxygen treatment and a wellness oxygen capsule cannot be described as having identical effects, and neither should be presented as a substitute for evaluation of a new symptom.

I place more weight on screening, device instructions, and monitoring than on how long someone stays inside. Stop and reassess if discomfort develops.

Review four points before the appointment

Report nasal congestion, runny nose, fever, or a strong cough; new ear pain, tinnitus, or dizziness; recent ear surgery, injury, or eardrum problems; and relevant history such as lung disease, lung surgery, possible pregnancy, or diabetes treatment.

List medicines and inhalers. If you use insulin or another glucose-lowering treatment, discuss meals and monitoring with a clinician. Do not stop medicine or add a decongestant on your own.

When cold symptoms are active, assessment and postponement may be more appropriate than forcing the appointment.

These symptoms need medical care first

Sudden hearing loss in one ear needs urgent same-day ENT evaluation rather than an attempt to manage it with an oxygen capsule. Severe ear pain, fluid or blood from the ear, or persistent severe dizziness also require medical assessment first.

For shortness of breath or chest pain, call 119 in Korea or seek emergency department care. Do not wait for an equipment session.

Suitability and response vary by individual. A clinician should review your symptoms and history. Hiding discomfort defeats the purpose of a carefully planned visit.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I use an oxygen capsule when I have a blocked nose?

Congestion can make pressure equalization more difficult. Report your symptoms and decide after appropriate assessment.

Should I tolerate ear fullness during use?

No. Tell the staff immediately. Pressure adjustment or stopping may be necessary; do not strain through pain.

Does an oxygen capsule replace treatment for a disease?

Devices differ in pressure, oxygen delivery, and intended use. It cannot be assumed to replace disease-specific medical care.

Before using an oxygen capsule, check today’s ear, nasal, and breathing condition rather than focusing only on the expected sense of rest. Reporting pressure and pain is the first safety step.

UHCELL Clinic Seocho reviews symptoms, history, and device instructions before explaining suitability and monitoring during use.
