“I have a photo shoot next week. Can I get lip filler this week?” Some patients open their calendar before showing a reference photo. That is the right priority. Swelling, bruising, and tenderness can follow an injection, and no one recovers on an exact timetable.

I don’t begin with a celebrity lip photo. I first examine the lips at rest and in motion, then ask about the product, area, and date of previous filler, cold sores, allergies, medicines, and any important event. I can’t promise a recovery date. When the schedule has no room for uncertainty, moving the procedure may be the better plan.

Define the change before discussing volume

“Natural” can mean a sharper border, a different Cupid’s bow, more lower-lip volume, or a change near the corners. The front, oblique, and profile views matter, but so do speaking and smiling.

Take one neutral and one smiling photograph in the same light. If you bring a reference, mark the single feature you like. I don’t promise to reproduce another person’s lips. Existing asymmetry, the relationship to the teeth and jaw, and the tissue itself set the starting point. Assessment comes before shape. It’s that simple.

Bring previous filler, cold sore, and medication history

For any prior filler in or around the lips, list the product, location, date, and whether you had a dissolving injection. An old treatment sheet or receipt can help when the product name is unknown. Recurrent cold sores, severe allergies, bleeding disorders, and active inflammation or infection also belong in the consultation.

Include prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines such as aspirin or ibuprofen, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Some can affect bleeding or bruising. Don’t stop them on your own. I review why you take them and the prescriber’s plan before discussing timing and preparation.

For an important event, plan for uncertainty rather than a promised recovery day

Swelling, redness, bruising, pain, tenderness, and firmness can occur after lip filler. Many reactions settle within days to weeks, but the course varies with the product, treatment area, and the individual. No clinician can guarantee how the lips will look the next morning.

Mention interviews, shoots, weddings, long trips, and makeup requirements at the start. If the buffer is short or this is your first filler treatment, waiting until after the event can be more prudent. I ask whether the schedule can tolerate a longer-than-expected reaction, not just how many days remain.

Common swelling and urgent warning signs are not the same

Bruising and swelling are known reactions, but unusual severe pain or a color change deserves attention. During or soon after treatment, report unusual pain, skin near the injection site turning white, gray, or blue, or any visual change immediately. Sudden trouble speaking, facial droop, or weakness in an arm or leg also requires emergency assessment.

Accidental injection into a blood vessel can cause tissue injury, vision problems, or stroke. It is uncommon, but potentially serious. Keep the clinic’s aftercare contact details and emergency instructions. Don’t wait for a routine follow-up when a warning sign appears. Safety comes before symmetry.
