An itchy scalp after hair dye—even your usual product needs checking

Hello, I’m Dr. Kim Kyung-soo, director of UHCELL Clinic Seocho.

An itchy scalp or ears after colouring is not always a rinsing problem, even if everything felt fine that day. I check behind the ears, the neck, and eyelids as well as the scalp, then establish when and where the symptoms began before another colour treatment.

Look beyond the scalp

Contact dermatitis from hair dye can cause itching, burning, redness, or blisters. It may appear straight away or later; feeling fine on the day does not rule it out.

Direct irritation and an allergy to a particular ingredient need different consideration. Timing alone cannot identify one chemical, and other scalp conditions may also be relevant.

Record whether the hairline, ears, neck, or eyelids reacted first, and whether there is swelling or weeping. Photographs can help document changes. Avoid scratching new wounds into the skin.

Previously tolerated dye still needs a review

Some permanent and semi-permanent dyes contain PPD, which can irritate skin or trigger allergy. It is not the cause of every reaction, so the actual ingredient list matters more than a brand name.

I don’t treat “my usual product” as proof of safety. Earlier uneventful use does not cancel out a new reaction. Mention any previous reaction to a black henna tattoo too.

Keep the packaging and ingredients, colouring date, symptom onset, and names of shampoos or scalp products used alongside it. A salon may be able to supply the relevant product details.

Do not retest a product that has caused a reaction

If a reaction is suspected while colouring, stop using the dye and wash the hair and scalp thoroughly with a mild shampoo. Do not layer alcohol-based scalp lotions or new active products onto it. Reduce additional irritation.

Do not apply the suspect dye behind an ear to see whether it happens again. A home product test is not the same as diagnostic patch testing in a medical setting; their purpose and interpretation differ. Assessment determines whether testing is appropriate.

“Natural” or “PPD-free” does not automatically mean safe. Other ingredients may cause reactions, so changing brands without investigating the cause may not resolve the issue.

Sudden swelling or breathing problems cannot wait

Seek care if itching worsens or blistering and weeping persist. Report eye discomfort alongside marked swelling around the eyes.

Sudden lip, tongue, or throat swelling, difficulty breathing, or severe dizziness may need emergency treatment. In Korea, use 119 or the local emergency service rather than waiting for a website reply.

I prefer checking the cause and the safety of future use to repeating dye exposure with an unexplained reaction. Avoid exposure while the skin recovers. Temporarily suppressing symptoms and avoiding their cause are different tasks.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does feeling fine that day rule out the dye?

No. Reactions can be delayed. Record colouring and symptom times, affected areas, and other products used.

Can a long-used product still cause allergy?

Past tolerance does not guarantee safety now. Irritation, allergy, and other causes need to be distinguished.

Can I switch straight to a PPD-free dye?

Other ingredients can also cause reactions. After a reaction, establish the cause and whether further use is appropriate before recolouring.

For a consultation at UHCELL Clinic Seocho, bring the ingredient list, photographs, and symptom timeline. I review exposure and the pattern of symptoms rather than assuming the scalp simply needs more washing.
