Taking Isotretinoin? Tell Your Clinic Before a Skin Procedure

Hello, I’m Dr. Kim Kyung-soo, Medical Director of UHCELL Clinic Seocho branch.

Can you have a laser treatment or peel while taking acne medicine? Some people do not remember the drug name, while others assume they do not need to mention a medicine they recently stopped.

Isotretinoin can dry the skin and lips and make skin more sensitive to sunlight. This does not mean that every procedure has one universal prohibition period. Your skin, medication dates, and the planned procedure need to be considered together.

Start with the exact medicine and timeline

Acne medicines are not all the same. Check the prescription, packet, or medication app for isotretinoin. Bring the current dose, start date, and date of the last dose.

Topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and exfoliating ingredients can also affect irritation. Mention any vitamin A supplement as well. Hiding the medication or stopping it from memory is not a safe way to prepare for a procedure.

Dry, sensitive skin may need to settle first

During treatment, the face and lips may dry easily, and even cleansing can cause tightness or stinging. Sun sensitivity may increase. If the skin is cracked, peeling, or markedly red, assess it before adding a strong procedure.

Use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer. Do not stack scrubs, AHA or BHA acids, and retinol. Continue sun protection outdoors. Adding a new active product to “prepare” the skin can increase irritation instead.

There is no single wait time for every procedure

Waxing is a clear example of a procedure that should be avoided during isotretinoin use and for a period after stopping, because skin can lift with the wax and scar. Lasers and peels, however, vary in device, depth, and area. One number cannot determine the timing of every procedure.

The prescriber and the clinician planning the skin procedure should share the relevant information. Do not stop medicine on your own for an appointment, and do not undergo a same-day procedure without disclosing it. A delay or a less irritating plan may be discussed when appropriate.

Write down four points before consultation

Bring the medicine name, daily dose, start date, and last dose; changes in dryness, chapped lips, redness, or sun sensitivity; topical acne medicines and exfoliants; and recent waxing, peels, lasers, or wound-healing problems.

If the skin cracks and bleeds or inflammation becomes worse, contact the prescriber rather than waiting for the cosmetic appointment. The priority between acne treatment and procedure timing should be decided after an assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I stop for a few days and have the procedure right away?

Do not decide this on your own. The dose, duration, skin condition, and procedure type need review with the prescriber.

Should I mention topical retinol?

Yes. Report prescription retinoids and skin-care retinol, acids, and benzoyl peroxide.

Can I omit it if my skin is not dry?

No. The medicine name and timing remain relevant to procedure planning even without obvious dryness.

If you are taking isotretinoin or stopped it recently, bring the medication packet and a list of your skin-care products. At UHCELL Clinic Seocho branch, we can review your skin and the planned procedure together and discuss appropriate timing and scope.

※ Skin responses and treatment progress vary. Please consult a clinician for an accurate diagnosis and an individual treatment plan.
