Considering fractional laser for acne scars? Why active acne, scar type, and recovery plans come first

Hello, I am Dr. Kim Kyung-soo, Chief Physician at UHCELL Clinic Seocho branch.

When acne scars become bothersome, it is tempting to start with a device name or a treatment count. But the consultation begins differently depending on whether red, tender acne is still appearing, what shapes and patterns the scars have, and how much recovery time is available before an important event.

I first assess current acne and irritation, then separate scar shapes and distribution before reviewing previous treatment reactions and upcoming plans. A fractional laser does not diagnose these conditions. It is one treatment option whose suitability can be considered after a clinical examination.

If red, tender acne is present, current inflammation comes first

Indented marks may be visible while red, tender papules or pustules are still recurring around them. In that situation, the scars cannot be considered in isolation. We also ask whether the acne recently worsened, whether any areas were picked, and which oral or topical acne medications are being used.

Active acne and scars may appear in the same area, but they raise different questions. I first check the distribution of inflammation, tenderness, crusting, and signs of irritation. Depending on the examination, controlling current acne or calming the skin may take priority before scar treatment is scheduled.

Scar assessment considers shape and location, not one depth label

Acne scars can include narrow, deep-looking pits, broader depressions, and gently rolling contours, often in the same person. The temples, central cheeks, and jawline may show different patterns. Red or pigmented marks can also be more noticeable than the indentations themselves.

During consultation, lighting and viewing angle are changed to separate surface contour from color changes. A photograph alone does not establish scar depth or a treatment plan. We also do not describe one fractional laser approach as suitable for every scar shape. The examination may lead to discussion of other approaches or to postponing treatment.

Describe previous procedures and skin reactions in practical detail

If you have had laser treatments, peels, microneedling, or injections, note the approximate date and area, plus how long redness, warmth, crusting, or color changes lasted. If the exact device name is unknown, the clinic, timing, photographs of recovery, or aftercare instructions may still be useful.

Tell the clinician about a history of keloids, wound-healing problems, herpes, current medications, and recent dermatologic treatment. This information is not used to promise an outcome. It helps determine whether further checks are needed and when a procedure may be considered.

Photo shoots, travel, and exercise belong in the recovery plan

Redness, warmth, swelling, or fine crusting may occur after fractional laser treatment. Their degree and duration vary with the treated area, treatment settings, and individual skin response. It is not possible to promise that every visible sign will be gone by a particular date.

Share any fixed photo shoot, interview, business trip, flight, outdoor activity, sauna, swimming, or strenuous exercise plans. Mention dates when makeup is essential and how much time can be left open for recovery. If the schedule is tight or the skin is unstable, adjusting the area or timing, or waiting until later, may be appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I have an acne scar laser consultation while I still have inflamed acne?

Yes, but the current inflammation and skin irritation are assessed first. Depending on the findings, acne management or calming care may come before deciding when to treat the scars.

Can my acne scar type be identified from photos alone?

Photos help show distribution, but lighting and angle can change how contours appear. Scar shape and skin condition should be assessed with an in-person examination as well.

How many fractional laser sessions will I need?

There is no single session count because scar shape and extent, active acne, previous treatment, and skin response differ. A plan is made after examination and reviewed according to the response at each stage.

Can I have treatment just before an important event?

Recovery varies, so treatment immediately before an event cannot be recommended as a general rule. Share the event date and the degree of redness, swelling, or crusting that would be acceptable.

Before an acne scar consultation, use a phone note to record where new acne is appearing, the dates and skin reactions from previous treatments, and fixed plans such as photo shoots, travel, or outdoor activities.

If you are considering an acne scar and fractional laser consultation in Seocho, UHCELL Clinic Seocho branch can review current acne, scar shapes and distribution, and the time available for recovery in that order.

※ Skin condition, treatment response, and recovery time vary by individual. Please consult a physician for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
